Merit Health Heart Welcomes Cardiothoracic Surgeon Stephen K. Ball, M.D.

Merit Health is pleased to announce that cardiothoracic surgeon Stephen K. Ball, M.D., has joined the medical staff, bringing more than three decades of experience in advanced cardiac surgery and minimally invasive heart procedures to patients throughout the region.
Dr. Ball specializes in coronary artery bypass surgery and the surgical treatment of valvular heart disease, with particular experience in minimally invasive approaches that can help reduce recovery time and improve outcomes for patients.
“Dr. Ball’s extensive experience and commitment to providing exceptional cardiac care will further strengthen our cardiovascular program and expand access to highly specialized services close to home,” said John Whiteside, Merit Health River Oaks CEO.
Board certified in thoracic surgery, Dr. Ball earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before pursuing fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Ball has held appointments at several nationally recognized institutions, including Vanderbilt University Medical Center, St. Thomas Hospital, the University of Florida Department of Surgery and Halifax Health Medical Center.
Dr. Ball provides surgical treatment for a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, including:
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
- Mitral valve repair and replacement
- Aortic valve replacement
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
- Aortic surgery
Dr. Ball has been a leader in the advancement of minimally invasive cardiac surgery and has contributed to numerous scientific publications and presentations focused on valve disease, hybrid coronary revascularization and transcatheter therapies.
